Warsaw side event

On 19 November 2013 an event jointly organised by the Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform and the IISD Global Subsidies Initiative entitled ‘Reaping Emissions Reductions from Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform’ was held on the sidelines of the Warsaw Climate Change Conference. The event focused on the opportunities that fossil fuel subsidy reform holds for reducing CO2 emissions, and in particular the role of the UNFCCC in supporting that process.  The event also offered an opportunity to discuss how to maximise emission reductions from fossil fuel subsidy reform, while at the same time protecting vulnerable households from the impact of higher energy prices.  The event was moderated by Simon Upton (Director, Environment Directorate, OECD) and involved the following discussants:

  • Hon Tim Groser, New Zealand Minister for Climate Change Issues
  • Professor (Hon) Rachmat Witoelar, Indonesian President’s Special Envoy for Climate Change
  • Laura Cozzi, Directorate of Global Energy Economics, International Energy Agency
  • Anna Czajkowska, Lead Analyst Clean Energy Policy, Bloomberg New Energy Finance
The Friends group was formed in June 2010 to support G20 and APEC leaders’ commitments to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies. The Friends encourage the G20 and APEC to implement their initiative as soon as possible, with maximum ambition and transparency.
