Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform

Denmark is supporting reform efforts around the world

Denmark is a founding member of the “Friends of Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform” and a prominent advocate for building international support around the issue. Denmark is also supporting concrete reform efforts in developing countries around the world via support to the IEA, WB-ESMAP and the IISD-GSI.

Danish Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate, Lars Christian Lilleholt, states: “The efforts required to phase out harmful subsidies are not a quick fix; multi stakeholder engagement and international cooperation are needed to promote best-practices and sustainable reform efforts. Subsidies encourage inefficient energy consumption and hamper demand for cleaner alternatives. A cost-effective and level playing field in the energy area will help to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy to the benefit of the climate and energy security.”
